The Ferry, Walberswick by Margaret Green
Margaret Green was born in West Hartlepool, County Durham and was always encouraged to paint by her parents as her father ran the local art club. From Hartlepool Art School she won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art at its war time home in the Lake District. There she met and fell in love with the painter Lionel Bulmer and the two of them visited Walberswick in Suffolk in homage to the English Impressionist Philip Wilson Steer who had visited Southwold and Walberswick during the 1880’s. After finding a dilapidated mediaeval hall house near Stowmarket, they moved to Suffolk, restoring the house themselves and adding a light filled studio. They made frequent excursions to paint in Walberswick and Southwold and exhibited at The New English Art Club shows and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
