TRADITIONAL BUT UP TO DATE

Suffolk Rush Basket Weaving & Traditional Log Baskets

Suffolk has a rich history of rush basket weaving, with artisans using locally harvested bulrush to create durable and beautiful woven goods. This craft dates back centuries, with hand-cut rushes from East Anglia’s waterways prized for their strength and flexibility. Traditionally, rush weaving supported rural communities, producing household items like mats, chairs, and baskets. By the 19th century, log baskets became essential in English homes for storing firewood.

Crafting Round & Square Log Baskets

Making traditional log baskets requires skill and precision. The process begins with selecting and drying rush, which is later soaked for flexibility before weaving. For round log baskets, weavers start with a circular base, using tight, even weaves to build a sturdy, long-lasting structure. Square log baskets require careful tension control to create well-defined corners, offering a more structured appearance. Many handwoven log baskets include a metal liner, preserving their shape and ensuring a lifetime of durability. Today, Suffolk rush log baskets remain a symbol of timeless craftsmanship, blending heritage and practicality to bring warmth and elegance to modern homes.
