Picture Lights

As part of a layered approach to a lighting scheme, picture lights have a useful role to play.  Picture lights not only illuminate the artwork but also increase the sense of space and add to the mood and atmosphere within a room. It is, however, important to select fittings that are appropriate to the scale of the art and consider the framing and use of glass used to protect the picture.

When choosing a picture light therefore, consider the following factors:

- Size and Proportion: The light should complement the dimensions of the artwork. A rough guideline is to select a fixture that is approximately half the width of the frame. This ensures balanced illumination without overpowering the piece.

- Style and Finish: The design and colour of the picture light should harmonise with both the artwork and the room's style. Whether opting for a contemporary or classic style, the fixture should enhance the aesthetic without drawing attention away from the art.

- Light Source and Colour Temperature: Modern picture lights often utilize LED technology due to its energy efficiency and longevity. It's advisable to choose LEDs with a colour temperature of 2700K or lower, emitting a warm light that enhances the artwork's colours and creates a welcoming atmosphere.

- Material Quality: Select fixtures made from durable materials that complement the room's decor and ensure longevity

It is also useful to bear in mind that picture lights should be correctly installed for best effect: -

- Mounting Height: Install the picture light such that the fitting does not obscure the picture.

- Angle of Illumination: Adjust the light to a 30° - 35° angle directed towards the centre of the picture. This will help minimise glare and shadows across the height of the artwork.

- Avoiding Glare: After installation, view the artwork from various positions in the room to ensure the light does not produce glare from any angle. Adjust the fixture as needed to achieve a clear and flattering display.

- Power Source: Ideally it is better not to hard wire a picture light as this reduces flexibility for maintenance or cleaning.  Preferably a fitting with a 2A plug or a "clock" plug and socket is neater if picures need to be moved for cleaning or decorating

- Dimming: If possible use dimmable fittings and if you are using a control system, set them as part of a scene to enhance the atmosphere and mood in the room.
