Raoul Dufy was a French Fauvist painter renowned for depicting open-air social gatherings. He worked across multiple disciplines including drawing, printmaking, book illustration, theatrical design, and furniture creation. Beginning studies at Paris's École des Beaux-Arts in 1900, his early pieces reflected Impressionist influences before he adopted the broader brushstrokes and bright colours associated with the Fauves around 1905. During the early 1920s, he focused on recreation scenes – horse races, regattas, parades, and concerts. His extended time on the French Riviera resulted in a series of Nice paintings. Dufy's colourful, decorative style became fashionable for ceramic and textile design.
