Dancers Ascending a Staircase, c1886, by Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas – Greetings Card
Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. He also produced bronze sculptures, prints and drawings but is famous primarily for his paintings of dancers. He was a superb draughtsman, skilful in depicting movement which can be seen in his depiction of dancers and bathing female nudes. He also painted racehorses and jockeys as well as portraits. Although he had initially wanted to be a history painter, he changed course and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to his work, he became a classical painter of modern life. Unlike his contemporary Impressionist painters, he did not paint outdoors (“en plein air”) as many of them did.
