Fox Hill, Upper Norwood, 1870 by Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro was born in St Thomas in the Danish West Indies (formerly a Danish possession but now in the US Virgin Islands) but he lived and worked mainly in the Paris area and is the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions from 1874-1886. He visited London in 1870-71. He was an Impressionist, influenced by Millet and Corot and painted mainly landscapes. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he started working in the Neo-Impressionist style.
