Autumn Leaves by John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent – Greetings Card
John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist and the leading portrait painter of his generation, known for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. His vast body of work includes around 900 oil paintings, over 2,000 watercolours, and countless sketches and charcoal drawings. He captured scenes from his extensive travels, including Venice, the Middle East, the Tyrol, and the United States.
Born in Florence to American parents, Sargent trained in Paris before settling in London, where he enjoyed widespread success and acclaim. His technical brilliance was especially evident in his masterful brushwork and fluid handling of paint. While his commissioned portraits reflect the grandeur of formal portraiture, his informal studies and landscapes often embraced Impressionist influences. In his later years, Sargent turned away from portrait commissions and focused on murals and plein air landscape painting.
