Penzance Railway Station by Stanhope Alexander Forbes
Stanhope Forbes – Greetings Card
Stanhope Forbes was born in Dublin, the son of Juliette de Guise Forbes, a French woman, and William Forbes, an English railway manager. After studying in France, he married fellow painter Elizabeth Armstrong in 1889. They lived in Newlyn, Cornwall, where they raised their son Alec. After Elizabeth’s death in 1912, Forbes later married Maudie Palmer, a former student and close family friend. Tragically, Alec was killed in action in World War I, and Forbes sculpted a moving memorial to him in their parish church. Stanhope Forbes died in Newlyn in 1947 at the age of 89 and was buried in Sancreed Parish Churchyard.
